Newmains Primary School & HSBC donate computers to the school

We're very lucky to have some wonderful friends, both near and far. With the kind gifts received from Newmains Primary School in Scotland and HSBC Bangladesh we now have enough computers to be able to run an after school computer class. So thank you to each and every one of you who helped this happen. You can see that the children thoroughly enjoy their time in the computer room, even if it is after school!

Thanks to The Canadian International School in Dhaka

We've got some great supporters here in Dhaka and from places further afield.

The students of the Canadian International School in Dhaka along with their Principal, Sylvia Gillett have once again helped to improve our school library by donating some book shelves, library furniture and books. Everyday it's looking more and more like a proper school library.

So thank you for your continued support, it really is appreciated by all the students and teachers.

HSBC Paint the School - "White" in time for Christmas

In December 2009, a group of volunteers from HSBC, led by their CEO, Mr. Sanjay Prakash, came to the school on their day off and painted the school 'white' and thankfully not 'red'!

It was a fantastic effort by the whole team, who were even supported by our Headmaster, who still managed to paint and not spill a drop onto his pristine shirt and trousers!

Thank you for giving up your time to help our school. Your support is really appreciated.

Our Annual School Programme 2009

Every year we hold an Annual Entertainment Programme at our school.

We invite all our parents and friends to come and see. We sing, dance, act out comedy plays and try to educate our audience through comedy, but most of all, we have a great time.

It's our chance to let our hair down and really enjoy ourselves!

If you missed our show we've added some clips below for you to enjoy. If you'd like a DVD of the complete show, become a 'follower' and contact us and we'll tell you how you can get your very own copy to keep and watch again and again.

Glaxo Smith Kline Orange Day - November 2009

Every year GSK have a day where their staff carry out volunteer work in the community. It's called the Orange Day, this year an army of GSK volunteers arrived on 23rd November 2009, and between them they gave nearly 200 children a talk on hygiene, prepared a hot lunch of chicken and rice on a open pit flame(I can tell you, it was delicious - their Sales Director could easily become one of Dhaka's finest Chefs!), they cleared the campus, planted trees and painted a large wall 'orange' to remind us of their visit. The children thanked them with an impromptu music concert.

GSK also donated de-worming tablets for all the children as part of our on-going health drive. So from all the children at the SoH, thanks for taking the time to come and help out at our school.

A particular thanks goes to Rumana Ahmed & Sarwar Khan. We hope to see you all soon.

The School of Hope receive a visit from the England U-19 Cricket Team

We had a wonderful surprise when the England U-19 Cricket team dropped in to say hello and to present us with 56,000 Taka which was the sum of all the fines collected during their tour. So thank you, and please continue to misbehave, because after all,it's for a good cause!

Welcome to The School of Hope - Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Our school was formed in 1990 and provides an 'almost free'* education to 200 children aged 4-11 who live in some of the poorest slums in Dhaka. Along with a daily educational school programme the children also receive a free hot meal and snack of fruit during their school day. The school is funded solely by donations.

This is is our blog - we aim to keep you updated and involved in what we're doing, what we're learning and who's supporting us and how you can help too.

So Welcome to The School of Hope Blog!

* Parents contibute a nominal amount of 5 Taka a month (£0.05 or $0.07 equivalent)
